Best Beaches for Shelling in Maine

We mapped the best shelling beaches in Maine so you can plan your adventure before you go.

1. Popham Beach State Park, Phippsburg — One of the finest beaches in Maine and one of the best shelling destinations on the entire Maine coast. Popham sits at the mouth of the Kennebec River where river-borne sediment meets the open Atlantic — creating a constantly shifting sandbar system that concentrates shells from multiple directions. Sand Dollars, Razor Clams, Moon Snails, and Blue Mussels are all regularly found here. The dramatic location at the river mouth and the views across the water to historic Fort Popham make this one of the most memorable Maine beach destinations for families.

2. Higgins Beach, Scarborough — A beautiful sandy beach south of Portland with excellent shelling particularly after northeast storms. The beach's exposure to the open Atlantic means shells wash up regularly from offshore waters. Blue Mussels, Periwinkle Snails, and Waved Whelks are all commonly found here. A quieter alternative to the more popular beaches of southern Maine with good shell variety.

3. Crescent Beach State Park, Cape Elizabeth — One of the finest state park beaches in Maine — a beautiful crescent of sandy beach with rocky headlands at both ends that are outstanding for intertidal shelling. The rocky areas support Dog Whelks, Tortoiseshell Limpets, Periwinkle Snails, and Blue Mussels in dense populations. The sandy beach delivers Moon Snails, Razor Clams, and Soft Shell Clams after storms. The combination of sandy beach and rocky headland in one park gives families two completely different shelling environments within walking distance.

4. Ogunquit Beach, Ogunquit — One of Maine's most beautiful and popular beaches — a three-mile barrier beach with excellent shelling particularly at the Ogunquit River end where tidal currents concentrate shells. Blue Mussels, Periwinkle Snails, Soft Shell Clams, and occasional Waved Whelks are all found here. The Marginal Way cliff walk adjacent to the beach adds a spectacular coastal walking dimension to any visit.

5. Reid State Park, Georgetown — A beautiful mid-coast Maine state park with two sandy beaches and extensive rocky intertidal areas — one of the finest family nature destinations on the Maine coast. The rocky areas at Todd's Point are outstanding for Dog Whelks, Tortoiseshell Limpets, and Periwinkle Snails. The sandy beaches deliver Razor Clams, Soft Shell Clams, and Sand Dollars after storms. The diversity of habitats in a single park makes Reid State Park exceptional for shell variety.

6. Drakes Island Beach, Wells — A quiet, relatively undiscovered barrier beach in Wells with excellent shelling on both its ocean-facing beach and in the tidal areas behind it. Less visited than the main Wells and Ogunquit beaches, making undisturbed shells more plentiful. Soft Shell Clams, Quahogs, and Blue Mussels are regularly found in the tidal flat areas behind the beach.

7. Ferry Beach State Park, Saco — A beautiful state park with a long sandy beach and excellent access to the tidal areas of the Saco River and Pine Point. The combination of ocean beach and estuarine tidal flat habitat gives families two different shelling environments. Soft Shell Clams, Quahogs, and Blue Mussels are found in the tidal areas while Moon Snails and Razor Clams wash up on the ocean beach after storms.

8. East End Beach, Portland — A small urban beach in Portland with excellent rocky intertidal shelling — one of the most accessible shelling destinations in Maine for families based in or visiting Portland. The rocky shores support Dog Whelks, Periwinkle Snails, Blue Mussels, and Eastern Oysters. The views of Casco Bay and the Portland skyline add a unique urban coastal character to the shelling experience.

9. Goose Rocks Beach, Kennebunkport — A beautiful three-mile barrier beach in Kennebunkport with excellent shelling particularly at the quieter northern end near the Goose Rocks inlet. The tidal areas behind the beach support Soft Shell Clams and Quahogs while the ocean beach delivers Blue Mussels, Moon Snails, and Waved Whelks after storms.

10. Laudholm Beach, Wells — A pristine, relatively undiscovered beach within the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve — one of the finest shelling beaches in southern Maine. The reserve's protected status means the beach is in excellent natural condition. The combination of ocean beach and the adjacent Laudholm Farm estuary creates outstanding shell diversity. Soft Shell Clams, Quahogs, Blue Mussels, and occasional Sand Dollars are all found here.
